Who is Bai Bureh|the leader and ruler of Military Strategies born 1840
Bai Bureh was born in 1840 in Kasseh, a village near Port Loko in Northern Sierra Leone. His first name, Bai, means Chief in the Temne language. Bureh’s father was an important Loko war-chief and his mother was a Temne trader from Makeni.
When Bureh was a young man his father sent him to the small village of Gbendembu in northern Sierra Leone, where he was trained to become a warrior. During his training at the village, he showed that he was a formidable warrior and was given the nickname of Kebalai which translates as ‘one who doesn’t tire of war’. When Kebalai returned to his home village, he was crowned ruler of Kasseh.
During the 1860s and 1870s, Bureh had become the top warrior of Port Loko and the entire Northern Sierra Leone. He successfully fought and won wars against other villagers and tribal leaders who were against his plan to establish correct islamic and indigenous practices throughout Northern Sierra Leone. In 1882, Bureh fought against the Susu people from French Guinea (now Guinea) who invaded Kambia, a town in northern Sierra Leone. Bai Bureh’s fighters defeated the Susu, pushed them back into French Guinea and returned the land to the local Kambia people. After winning several major wars, his popularity spread. The people of the north felt they had found a warrior who would defend their land. In 1886, Bai Bureh was crowned as the chief of Northern Sierra Leone.
The significance of Bai Bureh’s war against the British is not a matter of whether he won or lost the war but that a man who had none of what could be called formal military training was able to show that for a significant number of months he was able to take on the British who were very proud of their great military successes across the globe. The British troops were led by officers trained at the finest military academies where war is studied in the same way that one studies a subject at university. The fact that Bai Bureh was not executed after his capture has led some historians to claim that this was in admiration for his prowess as an adversary to the British.
The tactics employed by Bai Bureh in his fight against the British are very much the forerunner of tactics employed by guerilla armies worldwide. At the time these tactics were very revolutionary and he “succeeded” for the good reason he had expert knowledge of the terrain across which the war took place. Bai Bureh had pursued the war not just with sound military brain but also a sense of humour. When Governor Cardew had offered the princely sum of 100 pounds as a reward for his capture, Bai Bureh had reciprocated by offering the even more staggering sum of five hundred pounds for the capture of the Governor.
There is a very large Statue of Bai Bureh in central Freetown. He is pictured on several Sierra Leonean paper bills. A Sierra Leonean professional football club called the Bai Bureh Warriors from Port Loko is named after him.
Moseray Fadika reportedly admitted in hospital following deadly attack by alleged thugs of Education Minister Minkailu Bah in Mile 91.
PIPUL PIKIN MEDIA sources say Minister Minkailu Bah reportedly instructed his thugs not to allow Moseray Fadika entry into the mosque in Mile 91. Serious chaos erupted, as supporters of Moseray Fadika and Minkailu Bah battled to maintain their grounds.
Moseray Fadika was left badly affected and his car seriously damaged. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a supporter of Moseray Fadika wearing white cloth bottoms “covered in blood” with a bandage around his arm.
Although police had not yet said how the attack happened, reports are that top APC operatives are seeking to hide details of this chaotic story from the general public in order to avoid bad publicity for the APC party. But the youths in Mile 91 have vowed to revenge.
As the tussle of who succeeds Ernest Koroma rages, the President is now unable to stop the kind of chaos witnessed in Mile 91, and we should expect more of these chaos as the APC heads to its downfall. Moseray Fadika is now paying the price for supporting the ungrateful Ernest Koroma. They all birds of a feather flock together in the APC. Let them continue to fight.

Condoning corporate malfeasance in large scale land acquisitions: Is Sierra Leone becoming the “Wild West”?
I read with dismay a report in the Awoko Newspaper of 23 June 2016 captioned “Police stops EPA from closing ALA, Carmanor.” According to the report, two agriculture companies, African Lion Agriculture (ALA) and Carmanor Ltd, failed to comply with the provisions of the country’s environmental protection laws by not obtaining an environmental license for their joint agriculture project.
In 2013 ALA leased over two thousand acres of farmland in Imperi and Jong chiefdoms, Southern Sierra Leone, to set up rubber, oil palm and cocoa plantations. The company agreed to pay $5 per acre as annual rent to the landowners. Farmland in the Imperi chiefdom, where the bulk of the land was obtained, is in very short supply as the area also hosts the most destructive mineral sand mining operation in the country.
For several decades, the mines have yielded rutile, a type of titanium dioxide mineral, used in the manufacture of white pigment. The mineral right owner, Sierra Rutile- a company listed on a sub-market of the London Stock Exchange – uses a multi-storied water-based dredge to mine and process a thousand tons of the product per hour. The dredge leaves in its wake artificial lakes which make the mined-out land unsuitable for any useful purpose. ALA is a subsidiary of Sierra Rutile.
In June 2015, Carmanor and Sierra Rutile reached agreement for the takeover of ALA. In exchange for expanding ALA’s plantations and constructing an oil palm mini-mill, Carmanor will “earn-in” to ALA.
Sierra Leone’s environmental protection laws require any company seeking to undertake large scale agriculture to first obtain an environmental license. As a pre-condition for the license, the company should undertake an environmental impact assessment (EIA). The assessment should set out, among others, the potential environmental and social harm the project might cause and mitigation measures. It is an offence for a company to undertake such a project without holding a valid environmental license. EIA processes the world over, are critical for any environment-altering intervention. They allow for expert evaluation of the potential risks of a project, so that those who make decisions are better informed. The participatory nature of the process also allows members of the public to bring their perspectives to bear.
The ALA/Carmanor plantations have been operating since 2013 without an environmental license, and therefore in breach of environmental law. After babysitting ALA and Carmanor for three years, the environment regulator finally decided to enforce the law this month, only to be stymied by a police force that seems to have lost sight of its mandate.
It is normal practice for regulators and court officials to request police protection when punitive legal provisions or orders are being enforced. The environment protection agency in this case requested for police personnel to accompany officials effecting the closure of ALA/Carmanor project. According to the report, the police local unit commander, informed the EPA that his superior, an Assistant Inspector General “instructed me not to let this operation happen.” The commander finally gave the excuse of inadequate capacity stating that: “…we do not have the five armed personnel requested for…”.
Sierra Leone has a police force of around 12,500 and a paramilitary wing- the operational security division- numbering at least a thousand. In the 2016 budget, the police have the second highest allocation after the military. They also provide private security services to businesses and individuals on the side. It is inconceivable that the police are plagued by personnel problems. I understand from the report that a former Assistant Inspector General of Police, who now heads security at Sierra Rutile, the parent company of ALA reportedly said that, “we have to be careful in implementing the law”.
In 2012, the Director General of the Food Agriculture Organisation compared the spate of large scale land acquisitions in Africa to the “wild west” and called for a “new sheriff” to “restore the rule of law”. This call really resonates with our context. Our sheriff seems to be aiding the breach of the law, running a protection racket for errant, gangster companies. Government institutions admittedly have their fair share of dysfunction and territorialism but the conduct of the police in this case underlines a much deeper problem. At best, this makes the government look dreadfully incompetent and confused. It does little to dispel the perception of corruption and political interference in large scale land investments.
If there were a ranking of regulatory compliance by companies operating in Sierra Leone, ALA/Carmanor would be among the worst performers. ALA leased the land using a flimsy memorandum of understanding (MoU). No proper lease was drawn up or registered. Further, the company has paid only one year’s rent to the land owners but has been cultivating the land continuously since 2013. The land it took and did not pay for was the source of livelihood for the land owners in an area under pressure from destructive large scale mining.
It wouldn’t have taken a lot for the company to honor its obligations, with each acre of land leased costing a paltry $5 per year. Sadly, it seems ALA and Carmanor could not be bothered by the predicament of the land owning families.
Namati is currently working with 8 villages from the two chiefdoms to seek redress against ALA/Carmanor. On 31 May 2016, on behalf of the land owners, I terminated the MoU between ALA and the landowners for non-payment of rent, pointing out that their conduct had caused severe harm to these communities. From experience, I warned ALA/Carmanor not to attempt to contact the landowners directly. On 3 June I got an email response from the CEO of Carmanor Ltd in the United Kingdom stating that they had received the termination and the board was reviewing it. She promised to revert in a week but has yet to do so.
Meanwhile, in a clear ruse, on 7 June, staff of Carmanor and Sierra Rutile approached some of the families offering cheques and getting them to thumb-print documents that they did not read or explain to them. Evidently they were attempting to change the facts on the ground in an exploitative way. In the coming days, Namati will commence court action against ALA/Carmanor, who are still proceeding as if everything is normal.
Whatever the motivation, the action by the police undermines the rule of law and makes nonsense of our regulatory mechanisms. Aiding the commission of an offence is criminal. By preventing the Environment Protection Agency from carrying out its mandate, the police have become a party to the commission of an environmental offence.
The Executive Management Board of the police and the Police Council need to address this aberrant and unconstitutional behavior by the police, who are meant to be “a force for good”. Some companies in Sierra Leone would like nothing more than a “wild west” scenario. We must not let that happen. Our sheriff should be helping to uphold the law, not undermine it.

Petition made against Magdalene Coker for posting nude picture of Hawanatu Kamara to the President
Sorry we cannot post the picture of the act on our website however such act shouldn’t be happening in our community let alone amongst women and hence the need for the petition is a right move to stop further act. If you have any issue with anybody personally both male or female, (find alternatives to deal with it in a more civilised manner) therefore is no reason for anyone to publish one’s nude photo or explicit videos on social media which seems to be happening a lot of recent especially on Watapps and Facebook. We should stop such act and love one another and work towards making our country name proud.
Read the Petition Statement made below by Agnes Pratt (Queen of Social Media)
Petition:
Against the Sexual Exploitation Of a Sierra Leonean Woman Through The Misuse of Social Media Forums, by Magdalene Coker .
For The Attention Of His Excellencey Ernest Bai Koroma . We write to bring to your attention a disturbing and unimaginable act of betrayal to the women of Sierra Leone.
On the 27th June 2016 A lady by the name of Magdalen Coker made the ever so distasteful decision to post naked pictures of Hawa August Kamara on Facebook without her consent.
She claims her decision to upload such embarrassing and dehumanizing images was because she was “provoked” This act was vulgar to say the least but an absolute disrespect to our Muslim community as this happened in the holy month of Ramadan. The incident has forced the hand of those in the Diaspora to take immediate action.
Some have made public statements, some videos whilst others have personally contacted Magdalene asking her to issue a public statement apologizing to those whom she offended.
She refuses to apologies or show any acceptance or remorse that her actions were wrong disrespectful and will not be tolerated in our country on the grounds that 1 – The Victim Hawa did not give her consent for her images to be used 2 – It showed a lack of respect towards Sierra Leones religious and cultural practices –
The images dehumanized the women from Sierra Leone all over the world – And it showed an overall lack of respect for our beloved Salone.
The situation was shameful and embarrassing for everyone. It begs the question Is this the level our women have come to?
Are these the role models we now have for the future of Sierra Leone?
The posting of naked pictures on social media must be stopped immediately not only for the victims and there families but for our nation as a whole.
This cannot be tolerated and will not be tolerated. we call onto His Excellency Ernest Bai Koroma to take action on all perpetrators NOW, to prevent any more victims or anything like this ever happening Again. We ask that you punish sternly including imprisonment (where necessary) to those who commit crimes against another woman in such a nature.
For so long we have fought for the rights of women in Sierra Leone this is a fight we must fight together.
Please join us in signing this Petition in support of action against the sexual exploitation of Sierra Leone women worldwide through the missuses of Social media Forums.
Jemilia Kamara talks about lack of help and dishonest people to build Sierra Leone
She talks about how people are so ungrateful and dishonest in Salone especially family members yet people are saying those overseas don’t help to build the country.
