Donald Trump in Paris as his son faces Russia link quiz
Donald Trump flew to France yesterday as it emerged the panel investigating Russian meddling in the US Election will ask his son to testify. The US president was greeted by French counterpart Emmanuel Macron as he began a 36-hour visit to Paris. He will be guest of honour at today’s Bastille Day Celebrations which this year also marks the 100th anniversary of the US’s entry into World War 1.
His welcome came hours before Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate judiciary committee, said he was sending a letter to his son Donald Trump Jr “pretty soon” asking him to testify. It follows emails released by Trump Jr in which he appeared to accept information from Russia that could have damaged rival Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Earlier, France’s first lady Brigitte Macron and her US counterpart Melania Trump met her for the first time.
They toured Notre-Dame Cathedral before a boat tour on the Seine. At a press conference, Mr Trump said his son was a wonderful young man who took a meeting with a Russian lawyer, not a government lawyer. He called it “opposition research” and very standard in politics.
