Five foods that has more carbs compared to a bowl of pizza

0

When ordering pasta at a restaurant, the calories are almost always out of control. A dinner order of fettuccine alfredo at The Olive Garden can rack up 1,220 calories and 1,350 milligrams of sodium (and that’s without the salad and bread sticks). Creamy sauces and mounds of cheese can make any pasta dish less than healthy.

If you suffer from a mild case of carbophobia, listen up! Just because you shun pasta and bread doesn’t mean you’re avoiding the most carb-laden foods in all the land. There are a number of under-the-radar eats that actually pack far more carbs than an entire bowl of penne! Here, we tell you what they are…

1. Mango

Carb count: 50 grams per fruit

If you’re trying to eat low carb, a mango may not the best choice. But if eating a well-rounded, vitamin-filled diet is your goal, reach for this tropical fruit. Just half of one packs an entire day’s worth of vitamin C, a nutrient that wards off fat-storing cortisol spikes. If mangos typically make an appearance in your daily smoothie, add a scoop of protein powders and a handful of raw oats, too. This ups your drink’s protein and fiber content and slows the digestion of the fruit’s sugars, keeping you fuller, longer.

2. Sanwich Wrap

Carb count: 36 grams per wrap

If you typically go with wraps because you think they’re healthier than bread, you’ve got things all wrong. Not only do two slices of Ezekiel bread have about the same number of carbs as a wrap, wraps are far more calorie- and fat-filled than a standard sammy base. The reason: In order for the tortilla to stay flexible manufacturers add fat, often in the form of soybean oil and hydrogenated oils. Yuck! Not sure which bread is the best bet for a flat belly?

3. French Fries

Carb count: 63 grams, per USDA defined restaurant serving

While most people know that potatoes are starchy, French fries are super carb-laden, packing twice as many carbs as a bowl of pasta in a standard family-style serving. (You know, the baskets you’re supposed to share, but don’t.) It gets worse: Vegetable-oil-fried foods like fries contain high levels of something called inflammatory advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are inflammation-causing compounds that form when certain foods are cooked at high temperatures.

4. Banana

Carb count: 35 carbs, per extra large (9″ or longer) fruit

They may be carb-rich, but bananas get the green light in our book. They’re a good source of magnesium, a nutrient that aids protein synthesis, which, in turn, increases lean muscle mass. Magnesium also helps boost lipolysis, the process by which the body releases fat from its stores.

5. Energy Bar

Carb count: 45 grams per bar

Since carbs provide energy, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that energy bars are loaded with carbohydrates. That said, you’d be amazed at how many people don’t make the connection. On average, these health food imposters carry up to 45 grams of carbs—and are chock full of sugar and scary chemicals, too. They’re basically a triple threat to your health.

HOONTOO (SIERRA LEONEAN STEAMED BEEF AND POLENTA DUMPLINGS) by Elsie Davies

Check out the process on how to prepare Hoontoo, the Sierra Leone style by The Cooking Wardrobe blog..

The other day I was watching Master Chef and I heard one of the judges telling the contestants that the recipe they were about to use had one hundred and five steps. Goodness gracious me, it is just food not a car. I am pretty sure that dish would taste different and having the experience of tasting it would be worth all one hundred and fifty steps but it still sounded over the top to me and I am pretty sure I am not alone. When it comes to cooking, I like my food prepared with as little fuss as possible and this dumpling recipe is easy to prepare, delicious and healthy.

Ingredients I used are: 500g beef mince, 11/2 cups polenta, 1 tsp cayenne, 1 large brown onion, 6 cloves garlic, ginger 3-4cm, 1 jumbo cube and 2 small royco cubes, 4 spring onions, 1 green chilli, and 1 red chilli, 1/2 cup water, salt to taste.

blend half of the brown onion together with the ginger and garlic. In a large mixing bowl, add the onion mixture to the mince, polenta, cayenne and stock cubes..

Use your hands to mix the ingredients together, adding the water a little at a time

Arrange the dumplings in a large steamer, top with chopped red and green chillis, spring onions and brown onion wedges. Cover and steam for 20 minutes. Serve hot. Enjoy.

Akon says the youth should not depend on government to rebuild Africa

0

Senegalese singer, songwriter and businessman Akon has called on African youth to play an active role in rebuilding the continent and not depend of the governments.

The American-born music star was addressing over 2,000 youth from all over Africa in Rwanda’s capital Kigali during the final day of the maiden YouthConnekt Africa Summit organised to shape the future of the continent’s youth.

“We have to be the driving force to rebuild Africa. We cannot depend on governments to do it for us. Their job is to lay down the low and make sure that there’s accountability for the things that we do,” he was quoted by local media The New Times.

“When I was growing as an entertainer, I said to myself I don’t want to be remembered for just singing and dancing. Ultimately, I had to figure out what I can do that will help create a legacy. It hit me in the middle of the first song when the power just went off,” he said, while making reference to his 1 billion dollar solar project aimed at providing electricity to some 600 million Africans.

Akon, real name Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, is the co-founder of the Akon Lighting Africa project which primarily targets rural communities that are not connected to the electricity and also seeks to find ways to bring costs down to make power supply more affordable.

He called on Africans in the diaspora to join hands and change the narrative about the continent while they help fast-track its economic development.

“On the internet you will only see historical images and animals, as if Africa was a big jungle. Africans never gets full credit in any way. Entertainers, filmmakers and producers, the press and anyone that creates content should take part in redefining this continent,” he added.

The three-day YouthConnekt Africa summit opened on Wednesday under the theme: “Realizing Africa’s Youth Potential.”

It focused on establishing a policy, programmes and partnerships to guide the continent to its goals of creating at least 54 million jobs that will absorb the growing labour force.

Among the participants are government officials and special guests including Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Jack Ma, Founder and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD and most importantly successful entrepreneurs, artists and youth opinion leaders from across the continent.

The Summit was organised jointly by the Government of Rwanda in collaboration with UNCTAD, UNDP and other YouthConnekt partners.

Desperate to become famous at all cost: Nude video of Ghana girl Rashida Black Beauty went viral

0

Ghanian girl Rashidatu Mohammed a.k.a Rashida Black Beauty has come under fire on social media releasing her unclad video which has gone viral. She was bashed not just because of the video she posted but how fly was following her private part. (Video has been deleted and taking off social media)

Several articles, top social media pages and well know blogs and websites are currently the main topic of discussion of Rashida Mohammed. According to other pages Rashida did the nude video as she was given advice from one Ghanaian journalist that if she wants to become famous she has to do such behaviour. The video she did was explicit and flies were passing around her private part and the video was shared online and has now went viral.

Here is what actress Ama K (Ghanian Actress) said

“Rashida Black Beauty’s release of a nude video has become topical on social media and is receiving the buzz it needs.

Several celebrities have also commented on the video with most of them condemning her for releasing such an unpleasant video to the world. Some sections have called for counseling for her because to them, she has probably may be suffering from depression. Actress Ama K Abebrese has added her voice to the many comments on Rashida’s “disgusting” video.

For the actress, she won’t condemn Rashida for her actions and only prays that the video does not define her but rather builds her into a better person to face the challenges ahead of her.

She posted “I don’t condemn her, I pray that she is able to get past this, get good counselling and go on to achieve greater things. Hopefully these mistakes won’t define her”.

She however, reminded her of human nature saying “The same people who bring can bring you up are the ones who brings you down. Especially when they brought you up for something that had no substance. This girl who is clearly misguided and by her finding fame and being awarded for being controversial and spewing obscenities i.e. Mala**ka, she is now only doing what she thinks will continue to make her more famous”.

Rashida later offer an apology to the public for the viral video after tones of insults of her action. “My fellow Ghanaians I Plead with you, this is an old video and I didn’t know who released the video I’m so sorry please forgive me”

Lloyds Bank Staff aided multi-million fraud

0

Four Lloyds Banker workers who helped fraudsters steals millions of pounds from rich customers using a string of impersonators are facing jail. London-based bank staff Courtney Ayinbode, Tajinder Goldsmith, Benjamin Omiregie and Molly Jones were part of the high level and sophisticated scam between November 2012 and August 2013.

They sourced the computer system for rarely accessed accounts holding large sums of money and passed on the details prosecutor Paul Cavin said. They also ordered bank cards so imposters could pose as customers and transfer hundreds of thousands at  a time. One victim lost £750,975 in three days in July 2013 while a customer with a £3 million account avoided being defrauded when another staff member became suspicious and rang t0 check, the Old Bailey trail heard.

Kushveer Raulia, 25 operated a network of bogus companies to launder the proceeds which would be moved offshore. Once it is offshore it can come back on shore and nobody can trace it; Mr Cavin added. Galsinh, 35 of Hayes and Ayinbode, 29 of South Norwood were found guilty of conspiracy to defraud. Raulia of Hayes was convicted of converting criminal property, Parvez Hussain, 50, of Romford, who helped launder cash was convicted of converting criminal property. All denied the offences, Bailing them before sentencing, judge Anuja Dhir said: “It doesn’t follow you will not receive a conditional sentence”. Jones, 24 of Leigh-on-Sea, Essex Omoregie of no fixed address had admitted their part.
