The National Entertainment Awards (NEA) 2018 crave for premium

By Ibrahim Sorious Samura

Is there any event you will like to attend this December – that offers glamour, glitz, class, razzmatazz and elitism?

If so, then the National Entertainment Awards (NEA 2018) is the ultimate choice for you.

The NEA awards ceremony is an annual event designed to celebrate talented Sierra Leoneans with artistic skills in music, film, comedy, fashion, tourism, sports and cultural heritage, for personal and interpersonal growth.

More importantly, it is designed to rebrand Sierra Leone to the outside world through entertainment. Its maiden edition (NEA 2017) was one of professional showbiz. It brought the best in entertainment, government ministers, the Hip TV and Nigeria’s event host, blogger & CEO of Pocket TV – Osh Money. The Bintumani Conference Centre was coronated and transformed into an opera or a royal castle of Kings and Queens of entertainment. The euphoria was splendid, with ecstatic extravaganza. That was just the tip of an iceberg, all thanks to LAKE Productions (the premier and hosting company of NEA), RUGGED and other partners.

NEA 2018 is bringing home the flavour of the BET, the Afrima, the Grammy and the Oscars kinda awards to Sierra Leone. It is going to be the ‘Taste of Elegance.’

LAKE Productions, RUGGED and partners have done an overhaul of last year’s event and they are ready to change the negative narratives of not believing in a Sierra Leonean way of doing things. NEA 2018 is offering something different this time, to further satisfy and mesmerise its audience. It will be an experience they will live for ages.

A top international act will jet in to grace this year’s awards ceremony. LAKE and RUGGED have brought in SANSIM – a Dutch based company to deliver more goodies in the red carpet, lightning and stage setup. More partners will be brought in due course.

To live up to international best practices, LAKE Productions and partners will launch this year’s NEA Awards on Saturday the 28th July, 2018 at the prestigious QUINCY’S Nightclub in Aberdeen, Freetown at the cocktail party, where the following will be launched: the 2018 NEA awards, the largest entertainment One Stop Internet Platform, 2018 NEA nomination categories, the 2017 NEA DVD, the NEA fundraising, the official LAKE Productions website, date and venue of the NEA awards. The Keynote address will be delivered by Madam Memunatu Pratt – the Honourable Minster of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, with statements also from three other ministers – the Minister of Youth Affairs, the minister of Sports and the Minister of Trade and Industry. Special Guest of Honour is Her Excellency Mrs. Fatima Bio – the First Lady of Sierra Leone.

The cocktail launch at Quincy’s will give an insight of what is expected of the 2018 NEA awards ceremony. All entertainment stakeholders, corporate people and institutions are expected to attend the cocktail launch. It’s free, but strictly by invitation.

The CEO of LAKE Productions – Alhaji K. Tarawally aka Laj-K (a TV host, entrepreneur and a lecturer), is poised to make Sierra Leone proud by dignifying and entreating our celebrities in the most fashionable and grandeur experience.

Mr. Tarawally believes that NEA will add values to our superstars and help rebrand the once defunct entertainment industry.

“NEA is the real deal for 2018”, Laj-K laments.

The notion is to build a creative industry that can thrive well and compete with its regional and global counterparts. It is apparently clear that the creative industries provide more jobs and revenues in the 21st Century. If properly utilised, all and sundry will benefit and contribute greatly to our GDP as it has happened in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, etc. It’s on this background LAKE was founded to THINK LOCAL AND ACT INTERNATIONAL.

LAKE Productions is a renown event management company that has been organising the National Music Awards (NMA), National HipHop Awards, Miss Freetown, National Music Festival, National Entertainment Awards (NEA), and more.

The 2018 (second edition of) NEA awards will define what is meant by professionalism. It is going to be the best thing to have ever happen to the Salone entertainment, bringing back it’s lost glories.

‘ITZ NEA 2018.’

Discover QueenNak’s new world, as music beckons her with a debut track

By Ibrahim Sorious Samura

The Sierra Leone’s supermodel, professional painter, reality TV show host, philanthropist and entrepreneur – Neneh Ada Koroma (nicknamed as Queennak) is the latest celeb to choose the music world as her new destination. The China based Sierra Leonean star is set to release her debut song titled ‘Money Day Ya’ on Eid ul Fitr (Pray Day). She made this announcement on social media last week.

Ada has joined folks like Zainab Sheriff, Del Vaqyo, and other celebs who later entered the world of sounds and lyrics.

The song ‘Money Day Ya’ was recorded in China and was later mixed and mastered in Sierra Leone by Wilbert Music. The song is talking about making money and living a peaceful and comfortable life. It also addresses haters and fake friends in society.

Queennak is renowned for her arts – (fashion, painting, culture, modelling, designing, acting &creativity); charity – through her charity foundation; entrepreneurship – establishing several businesses; and reality TV show.

She has many accolades and records on her name. Becoming the first Sierra Leonean to represent her country at the Youth Olympic Games arts and exhibition in Nanjing, China.
The fist black to represent China at the Milan Expo arts exhibition in Italy.
The first black to do traditional Chinese paintings and played the Chinese Guqin (a 7 string musical instrument).

She has organised the biggest arts and cultural international festival that hosted government officials and international media outlets in China as a Sierra Leonean. During the Ebola outbreak, she hosted a Charity Gala and raised over $ 300,000 and donated it to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea in 2014. She has also organised a charity gala at the World Trade Center in New York and donated the proceeds to Portugal and the United States of America. She was the second highest donor to the flood victims at the Siaka Stevens stadium after the late Moseray Fadika. And many more.

But why the sudden decision to try music? Her fiancee, the Visual Arts artist – Morris aka Wonder Boy, was well in place to respond: “She has been a great fan of music and she wants to contribute to nation building through music.” To represent her country Sierra Leone around the world as a talented musician, and it’s an honest way of making money too, lol,” he told me.

Morris is believed to be the one that lured Ada into music. The relationship between the two has been amazing in the past few months. The couple has kept tongues wrangling over their romantic social media tweets lately. It is a hidden secret the duo are dating, as confirmed by Morris himself. As how Queennak entered the ‘wonder world’, Morris narrated below:

“She is my girlfriend and we met in the United States of America when I went for the All Stars Music Festival.” She was in the States doing reality TV shows,” words from the Wonder Boy.

It could be recalled that Wonder Boy was in the United States in December 2017 to perform at the All Stars music festival where he thrilled the audience with a splendid performance.

The two lovebirds are a perfect fit. Morris represent a complete celebrity with a flamboyant and audacious appearance and physique, any queen would prefer. Ada QueenNak’s intelligence and her endowed features are every dude’s wannabe. Her spotless skin and dangerous curves are well enough to get the strongest man on his knees.

They have joined a list of celebrity couples in Sierra Leone.

Get ready for QueenNak’s debut – ‘Money Day Ya’, from the WONDER WORLD. Pray Day is the day to discover the other world of Ada. You doubt it? Watch out

Daddy Saj completes his second degree in the United States

Daddy Saj completes his second degree in the United States

By Ibrahim Sorious Samura

The search for knowledge is ever innate in man in every sphere of his endeavours. From the crib to the casket, the quest for seeking knowledge (either by assimilation or formal means) remains an unending one. That notion well epitomises Daddy Saj’s decision to pursue higher education abroad after a successful music career.

Getting to the top of his music career has never stopped Joseph Gerald Adolphus Cole, popular on stage as Daddy Saj or Diamond Saj to pursue his childhood dream of becoming an educated elite. Saj sacrifices his pleasures and his music career in the United States to achieve this dream.

On the 1st June 2018, Daddy Saj graduated with a second degree (RN-BSN Bachelor’s degree) in Nursing Health Science at the City University of New York School of Professional Studies in the United States of America. This is in addition to his earlier Registered Nurse AAS Associates degree he earned in 2014. This has put him among the highly educated Sierra Leonean musicians. The untold story of his academic prowess has been unravelled in this piece.

Well known for his ‘Corruption’ famed song in 2003, Daddy Saj is one of Sierra Leone’s finest rappers who uses his rap music to speak out the ills of society. He is one of the few Sierra Leonean artists who was highly acclaimed in Africa and beyond in the early 2000s.

Daddy Saj started recording his first album at the Back Street Studio in Central Freetown in 1996, which was produced by the late Tony Boy. The album was however not a successful one. He fled Freetown for Conakry due to the outbreak of the war in 1997 and lived there as a refugee.

He met with Sierra Leone’s best musician then, Jimmy B, who helped him modelled his music career with the help of other Guinean musicians like the late MC Chanama, Bill de Sam, Kill Point, Straight Pholosophe and more. Saj returned back to Freetown, Sierra Leone in 2000 and with the help of Sahr Issa (a producer), they formed the first musical group in Sierra Leone called ‘Planet Sound.’ His connections and interactions with Jimmy B in Conakry gave him (Jimmy) the courage to bring a studio in Freetown in 2001. Saj became the group leader for Paradise Family after he had signed for the label. He then released his first hit single titled ‘Baby joe’ before releasing ‘Congratulation’, in his first album titled – Salone Na We Yone.

The Paradise Family ended in 2002, and in 2003, Saj went solo and released ‘Corruption E Do So’, (under the Daddy Saj Entertainment) which became a public anthem. The song exposed high-grade corrupt practices within the then government and spread like wild-fire in Sierra Leone and across Africa, in terms of airplay on radio stations and public places. Its radio airplay was shortlived due to threats from government officials to ban it, which they deemed was a catalyst for public unrest.

After that album, Saj released ‘CheChe’ in 2004, followed by ‘Dirtiest Part’ and others in 2005. Daddy Saj released ‘Water Melon Politics prior to the 2007 general elections. In 2012, he released ‘You Go Learn’.

In all his five albums, Daddy Saj was able to deliver his concepts in Krio and English blending rap and traditional goombay flavours. His music career was so far a success story, with his songs making it to the African compilations.

Daddy Saj was known for his popular slogan – ‘Fayamambo’ (Krio greeting – ‘peace be with you’), and the respondent says – ‘Lef bad hat bo’ (loosely as- ‘abstain from bad heart’). Saj says the slogan has a spiritual connotation. “Every time I say ‘fayamambo’ on stage, it destroys the powers of everyone with evil intentions.”

Academic journey…..

Joseph Cole aka Daddy Saj started his schooling at the Saint Anthony Primary School in Freetown before proceeding to the Government Model Secondary School, where he attained his 5th form. He couldn’t take the GCE O’Levels exams due to lack of financial support. Cole therefore opted to study Building Construction at the Trade Center in Kissy, Freetown. But his academic journey wasn’t going as planned due to poverty, war and lack of encouragement.

After the war, Daddy Saj started recording music with Paradise Records, where he got his breakthrough and later dominated the art in Sierra Leone. Upon reaching his apex in music, he travelled to the United States of America.

In 2010, Cole started college in the States with prerequisite courses which were non-credit classes, because he did not have a high school diploma or certificate from his home country, Sierra Leone. In 2011, he officially started the college’s credit courses and later earned his first degree as a Registered Nurse AAS associates degree in 2014.

Cole left to make money for two years and returned back to continue his academic mission in 2016. Two years later in June 2018, he graduated with another degree, RN-BSN Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science from the City University New York School of Professional Studies.

“As a musician, I sacrificed my life to create awareness about the misuse of power and public funds by politicians,” he said.
Now living in the USA, I have decided to upgrade myself by attaining a relevant university degree that I can take to my home country and help my people, which has always been my mission.”

“To one day become a doctor in healthcare delivery has always become my greatest passion which was impossible in Sierra Leone, but now that I live in the US, I sacrificed my music career and comfort to achieve this dream,” he continued.

With Cole’s above academic trajectory, his academic journey is not done yet, as he has already enrolled in a Masters Degree program to become a health practitioner in addition to his studio work.
“I am currently in studio doing more songs that would positively impact my country.”

As a Born Again Christian, Daddy Saj wants to use his music to educate the people on how Sierra Leone can be a better nation. On where he throws his weight, he responded, ….”Music is my passion and to become a doctor is my long standing dream.”

Daddy Saj decided to share his story in order to inspire young, who think they can’t continue with their dreams due to the challenges they are facing. More importantly for his colleague musicians who think going back to school is a bad thing. He gave tribute to the late rapper – Shine The God Son, who deprived his music career and comfort to pursue his university degree. Who else will follow suit?

“I’m proud to say I’m a symbol of hope to many youths…”

To his colleagues, he drops it below:
“My advice to musicians is for them to use their music to impact lives, not for personal gains.” At the end of the day, the people will remember you for the sacrifices you made to improve the lives of others,’ he stated.

Congratulations to Daddy Saj
