Reflecting On Our 58th Independence: Time to Forge Head

A Special Commentary By Ranger

On Saturday 27th April, 2019 Sierra Leone will be celebrating its 58th Independence Anniversary since 1961.

Sierra Leoneans in and out of the country will reflect on how far we have come since we de-linked ourselves from the political yoke of our colonial British masters.

It will definitely be a trip down Memory Lane as we measure the gains we have made so far; and our lapses which should give us the impetus to chart the road map we need to roll-out to push the country forward.

On reflection, in 1961 the new nation known as Sierra Leone was born at the stroke of midnight, when it’s green, white and blue flag was unfurled. A huge crowd, gathered at the then Brookfields Playground in Freetown to watch the historic moment, which broke into tumultuous cheering.

The changing of the colours happened on April 26, 1961, with the light of the British flag turned off at exactly 11.59pm and the flag of the new independent Sierra Leone unveiled for the first time at exactly 12 midnight.

Queen Elizabeth II sent her cousin, Prince Edward to stand in her stead. It was him that handed over the constitutional instruments to the then Sierra Leone Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, to tumultuous applause from the general public and representatives in Parliament.

This marked the Independence of our nation which formally began as the Duke of Kent handed over royal instruments recognizing Sierra Leone as an independent nation.

Since we became an autonomous nation much water has passed under the bridge with regard the socio-economic and political strides we have so far made. But it is an established fact that despite gaining independence from Britain via neo-colonialism, we were positioned to largely become heavily dependent on British aid.

This is understandable when cognisance is taken of the fact that the British are very interested in exploiting our resources which with all amount of certainty has contributed greatly to catapult them to a First World status and the trend still continues.

The umbilical cord that they have diplomatically created has been made so subtle, clothed into giving us the impression that they are genuinely keen in deepening our diplomatic credentials and enhance socio-economic growth but the crux of the matter is that such an interest is bordered on blatant and outright exploitation.

However, we can objectively argue that if our political leaders that assumed political power after the era of the Post-Independence Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, have done this beautiful and resourceful country a disservice to the chagrin of the majority of Sierra Leoneans Authoritatively, we can claim that if this country was not somehow cursed with such leaders who were so subservient, always dancing to the tune of our former colonial masters, who manipulated them to suit their selfish aggrandisement, this country would not be in quagmire in which it is today.

Indeed, since we gained Independence it has not been all gloom and doom as indeed we have made some amount of progress on different fronts but the crux of the matter is that bad governance, greed, tribalism and institutionalized, massive corruption have all robbed this country of rising from the doldrums. It is really pathetic to say the least.

To make matters worse and reversing all the gains that we have made an internecine and senseless war reared up its ugly head decimating every facet of the country not to talk of the many lives it consumed leaving in its trail underdevelopment, misery and sorrow further plunging the country into the doldrums.

In celebrating our country’s 58th Independence Anniversary many are pessimistically asking the question: What should we really celebrate?

This question keeps coming up from different quarters simply because the vast majority of Sierra Leoneans are wallowing in abject poverty finding it very difficult to make ends meet. The economy is currently in a mess as the dollar exchange rate to the Leone is skyrocketing nearly every week translating in inflation manifest in increases in the prices of basic commodities. Many are disillusioned, only hoping that things will change.

It can be said that there is indeed a glimmer of hope in the horizon as the current political dispensation under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio is pursuing an ambitious New Direction policy geared towards overhauling what it referred to as an “inherited battered” economy. Indeed, we have witnessed the implementation of the Free Education program, a Single Treasury Account to eliminate leakages, a dogged anti-corruption stance, the deepening of women empowerment, taking a tough stance against violence against women, pursuing technology and innovation as well as luring direct foreign investments. Since the government is at an embryonic stage we cannot objectively conclude that it has not added value to us as an Independent State.

Building a sustainable human capital is very much paramount in the journey of a New Direction because when a nation has an enlightened populace there is every likelihood that we will make meaningful inroads to the development we are all aspiring for.

Of essence also, is to put premium on agriculture for self-sufficiency and exportation because the more we export, the more we will earn foreign exchange which will make the Leone very appreciable.

Youth empowerment must be seriously considered as they, the youth, form the bulk of the country’s population but majority of them are not gainfully engaged which has resulted into the surge of hooliganism, cliques and robbery. We need to make them more relevant to the country’s development trajectory and indeed they can be positively transformed.

As we celebrate, let us look back from how far we have come and make solid projections which we must patriotically, genuinely strive towards putting aside selfish interests greed in order to harness the resources we have been endowed with so that standards of living of the vast majority of Sierra Leoneans will improve remarkably. This should not be a matter of politics but must be a national crusade that we must win and indeed win us must.

Happy 58th Independence Anniversary to all and sundry. Sierra Leone will surely rise again!

And as we reflect, let us keep in mind our national anthem and let’s put the words into motion:

High we exalt thee, realm of the free;

Great is the love we have for thee;

Firmly united ever we stand,

Singing thy praise, O native land.

We raise up our hearts and our voices on high,

The hills and the valleys re-echo our cry;

Blessing and peace be ever thine own,

Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.

One with a faith that wisdom inspires,

One with a zeal that never tires;

Ever we seek to honour thy name,

Ours is the labour, thine the fame.

We pray that no harm on thy children may fall,

That blessing and peace may descend on us all;
So may we serve thee ever alone,

Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.

Knowledge and truth our forefathers spread,

Mighty the nations whom they led;

Mighty they made thee, so too may we
Show forth the good that is ever in thee.

We pledge our devotion, our strength and our might,

Thy cause to defend and to stand for thy right;
All that we have be ever thine own,

Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.

SIERRA LEONE CELEBRATES 58 YEARS OF SELF RULE: BY KEMOH SAIDU SESAY

After 150 years of British colonial rule, Sierra Leone celebrates 58 years of independence and self-rule. A lot has happened along the way, but we have managed to reach here as a nation.

Fifty-eight years ago, on the 27th April 1961, Sierra Leone gained independence from her colonial masters. It was a day that came with hope and unending promise of a better and united Sierra Leone. A new dawn, that brought forth magnificent dreams of a developing and vibrant Sierra Leone, where no one will go to bed starving, where no one will be left out because of lack of proper education, influential family background or connections.

But fifty-eight years on, those beautiful hopes and dreams have been washed away by endemic corruption, bad government, lack of patriotic and selfless leadership. Where is Sierra Leone heading as a 58 years old woman?

On April 27, Sierra Leone as a promising nation with a sea of natural resources turns 58 years. Celebrations across the country to mark independent day have become a usual tradition. There is no harm in recognising and celebrating this momentous occasion. But we need to ask ourselves, are we independent as stated in written and oral theories? What have we achieved in 58 years of self-rule? Hmm! Tough questions that require a glass of chilled water from Grafton to refresh my thought process. Actually, there are no adequate answers to those germane questions. One will put up a vague and clueless claim to satisfy thy conscience willingly that colonial era was a period of crude, harsh and inhuman de-culturation of our forefathers. We have achieved freedom from such barbaric and inhuman treatment meted on our people. Oh yes! What more can we boastfully be proud of like our sister countries who went through similar ordeals? Virtually a youth from the slumb will say “nothing tangible as an achievement” because their socio-economic status is the same since John was a lad.

Today 58 years later, we are as dependent as ever, dependent mentally, politically, socially, economically, technologically and any other form of dependency you can elucidate. Is it happy dependent day? I don’t know but I agog you know. Our so-called colonial masters have given us self-rule but withholding our economical, social, cultural and political will to thrive productively as a nation. Neocolonialism is at play. Poor citizens with myopic and selfish leadership. Our national cake has been mutilated beyond immediate recovery by corrupt, greed and wicked political lions and lionesses.

The current political dispensation will tell you that the country’s economy is on life support mechanisms. My question is, what have they done in their one year of governance to resuscitate our dying economy? They have partially done well but a lot is expected to be done to ameliorate the living standard of Sierra Leoneans. Don’t get me wrong, “Papa D Grone Dry Ooo,” a struggling youth cannot go to bed with an enthusiastic hope of a better tomorrow. We don’t expect you to score the beautiful goals but make use of our skilful assist by listening to our solemn cry as a nation. We voted for change; we await to feel that desirous change.

Let us take a flashback in the last 29 years of the 58 years of independence, we have been ascribed as survivors. Yeah! We are war survivors, Ebola survivors, flooding survivors, mudslide survivors and so on. Our country is known in international news as a land of survivors.

Migration in the independence state should be about a choice and realistic optimism. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will assert that “an active hope and not despair.”

Citizens all, today we are 58 years old since independence, I sincerely entreat you all as compatriot to help each and every government to succeed for the better good of all. Let us respect and allow our leaders to work in a free and less pressured vicinity that will extricate them from being corrupt and wicked. Ethnic and political sentiments have put a knife to the things that once held us in unionism and felicitous camaraderie. Now we are apart! This is not the type of freedom our forefathers fought for ruthlessly. We need all hands on deck and stand on firm resilience against those vices that have the erection to keep us apart.

Even though our living condition is catapulting to Darwin’s theories of survival of the fittest and struggle for existence; but, I assure you as a citizen who believes in this nation that one day this country will become a place like HOME with unmatched privileges, if only we work together. Abraham Lincoln posited that “together we are far, alone you are fast.” True sustainable development in Sierra Leone requires political, economical and cultural emancipation plus a united Sierra Leone.

Congratulations to the beautiful people of Sierra Leone on your 58 years of self-rule and independence anniversary.

Meet Doreen Archer-Campbell, a new gem is set for the 2019 Miss Mano River Union International Beauty Pageant

The Sierra Leone’s entertainment industry has taken some strong path in creating the platform for young and vibrant youths to showcase their true gift. The Mano River Entertainment Company has joined the ranks of nation builders in bringing to the public the first ever Miss Mano River Union Beauty Pageant in Sierra Leone.

This will be classical and breathtaking as it is a combination of advocacy and promotion of tourism, cultural awareness of the people and the many unique traditions of the Union countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Cote D’Ivoire. This pageant queen will become the ambassador of the Union promoting its awareness in the four countries.

It is no secret that when it comes to the functions of the Mano River Union, very little is understood about the Union and the queen will use her term of reign to educate and raise awareness of its importance for the region.Among those contesting for the crown is Doreen Archer-Campbell, a 4th year medical student at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences and she will be representing Sierra Leone against other MRU country’s contestants on 25th April 2019; at the Family Kingdom.

Miss Doreen was born and raised as the first child to her beloved parents Rev. Arnold Archer-Campbell and Mrs. Mariam Archer-Campbell an interior decorator. At her early beginnings, she started her academic journey at Synbenclaire Nursery School and enrolled at the Cockeril Preparatory School till her National Primary School Examination where she performed excellently among her peers.

She furthered her secondary schooling at the S.O.S Hermann Gmeiner School and Beacon High School. In March this year, Doreen Archer-Campbell was a contestant at Miss COMAHS.Growing up with her parents, she inherited the art of pageantry who also has an admiration for pageantry. Miss Doreen’s love for pageantry and fashion motivated her to establish her own brand called Doreen’s Archer Design. She is currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of her brand.

This Gem is also working assiduously on cervical cancer awareness which has been one of the major challenges faced by the health sector. This will set the pace for her to establish her proposed Archer’s Cervical Cancer Foundation which will be served as a nonprofitable organization.When asked about why she opted to represent Sierra Leone in this year’s maiden edition of Miss MRU Beauty Pageant 2019, in her words, “I want to make my country Sierra Leone proud by putting it at the top among fellow MRU countries. Again, pageantry is my dream and thus, I am happy to be living the life of my dream.

This is what I ever wanted.” Miss Doreen Archer-Campbell added that she will not be representing herself or her college but she will be flying the banner of Sierra Leone so high.“All I need at this moment is for my fellow Sierra Leoneans to give me their full support. It is our time to win, it is about time we are celebrated and the time is now. All I needed is everybody’s support.” Miss MRU S/L representative said.

SIERRA LEONE TO CELEBRATE ITS INDEPENDENCE IN GRAND STYLE, COURTESY OF THE JULIUS MAADA BIO WOMEN’S WING

Madam Fatima Maada Bio reveals that, the celebration will be held at the country’s National Stadium and the country will be having no international artists or Head of states to grace the occasion, but rather will be showcasing local contents like special parade by school pupils and uniformed workers, performances by local artists, footballers, but to name a few, while encouraging every Sierra Leone to go out and celebrate the Green White and Blue, which symbolises; Agriculture, Unity and Justice and Natural Harbor.

First Lady stated the significance of this Year’s celebration, highlighting the various reasons why everyone should be proud of celebrating Mama Salone, among which, is to change the mindset of the world that Sierra Leone has been known and associated with war, corruption, poverty and a lot more negative things in the past and to start portraying and showing off all the positive sides of a great nation.

Minister of Fisheries, Hon. Emma Kowa, who doubles as the chairperson of the JMB women’s wing, admonished every Sierra Leonean to celebrate with caution, self discipline and high level of patriotism, as every Sierra Leonean, irrespective of political party affiliation is highly invited, and the celebration will be happening in every district nationwide.

East End Derby set to Climax The Sierra Leone Premier League as Ports Authority Set to Engage East End Lions

The Sierra Leone Premier League for the past two months have indeed witnessed great matches which in turn, excited the fans so much that they yearn for more.

In the East part of Freetown, especially Clinetown, Fourah Bay, Up Gun, Dockyard and its environs, there are only two names synonymous to frequent arguments by fans as to which is the best. These are moments even neutrals could not control the euphoria of fanatism on the minds of these arch rival fans of Ports Authority and East End Lions.

The meeting of these two was so symbolic during the twentieth century that, Easterners declared that day a holiday whenever they meet. Times have really changed with innovation and dynamism a mindset to create the positive.

Fc Kallon’s meeting with East End Lions on March 31st 2019 was indeed a historic moment in Sierra Leone Football, but there’s no match so big in the eyes of Easterners than that of the Water Front Boys meeting the Killers.

Classified amongst the best football showpiece so far in the history of Sierra Leone Football, there’s no better way to draw a close to the first round of the Sierra Leone Premier League season than a coincidence of Ports Authority playing East End Lions, no matter the difference in their respective position on the log.

On Wednesday, 10th April 2019, another history is set to be made in the calendar of the 2018/19 Premier League as two old foes come face to face at the Siaka Stevens Stadium playing for pride, honour and Purpose.

Being a rejuvenated side under new head coach Ajina Sesay with three wins and one loss, the Water Front Boys may just think there is no better moment of meeting East End Lions than this, coming from a three match winning spree.

East End Lions may be still buoyed by their two-goal riot against league leaders Fc Kallon on 31st March coupled up with some brilliant performances, and will have it in mind as an opportunity to go top of the log with even draw after Wednesday evening.

The stakes are just too high for both teams as a win for Ports Authority will take them a point above Central Parade who they defeated on Sunday evening by two goals to nil with twenty two (22) points and a touching distance of just one point from league leaders Fc Kallon and East End Lions, who are both locked on with twenty three (23) points each, separated by one goal.

The East End Killers are the team yet to beat boasting to have the league’s meanest defence with just two goals allowed, while Ports Authority despite loosing four, could boast of the same number of wins to Lions with six and having the record to have drawn the least number of matches with just one.

Whatever way Wednesday’s match go, the fans are sure to be entertained with the anticipation by both teams fans, just adding spice to one of the Sierra Leone Premier League biggest fixture of all time.
