BBC LONDON INTERVIEWS H. E. FATIMA MAADA BIO ON HER LIFE CHANGING CAMPAIGN

First Lady Bio was interviewed by the BBC on her unique and very direct approach to women empowerment. She was interviewed on both TV and Radio. Her Excellency made it clear that the problems she decides solve in her country is based on what the people need. She is on ground, interacting with the people, understanding their needs and designing result based programmes. Her #HandsOffOurGirls campaign has been perceived as confrontational in some quarters, but she has always known that advocating for women empowerment was never going to be easy, but she is determined with a very supportive President.

Since the controversial interview on circumcision in The Gambia, the issue was raised. She made it clear, that she is fully in support of the government’s position; that girls should have the right to choose if they will be circumcised or not once they are 18. There are issues like rape and early marriage, her office has prioritised. In Sierra Leone rape is a clear and present danger. The seriousness of the rape scourge, made the Office of the First Lady, working with the Ministry of Gender, submit a position note to the Attorney General , and they staged a peaceful protest march through the city of Freetown with First Lady’s from different African countries supporting on ground. This led to the President of Sierra Leone declaring a state of emergency on rape in Feb 2019. She invited all the Paramount Chiefs and their wives to the #HandsOffOurGirls campaign, because they are in a better position to put a stop to early marriage, than mere legislation.

Continuing with the issue of circumcision, she says some activist have issues with her stating she is a circumcised woman, and some of these activists are more agitated when she says she has not experienced the negative complications associated with being circumcised. Unfortunately she stated she cannot be “uncircumcised” to give a more objective analysis. She went on to say, both her daughters are not circumcised. She concluded, some anti-circumcision activist should present more holistic, non-biased studies. In Sierra Leone they should engage more with the new administration in the Ministry of Gender.

First Lady Bio said Africa is making positive strides in women empowerment. It is also great to see women taking responsibility for the development of their community. The new government in Sierra Leone is fully in support of equality . This is reflected in the choice of cabinet ministers, and Sierra Leone also appointed the first female Attorney General in the person of Dr Dr Priscilla Schwartz, also Hon. Nabeela F. Tunis the Foreign Affairs Minister is also female.

H. E. FATIMA MAADA BIO TAKES WORLD STAGE AT THE WOMEN DELIVER CONFERENCE: VANCOUVER CANADA

Women’s empowerment has always been the passion of First Lady Bio since she was a teenager. She was a key speaker on the topic “Keeping Girls in School and Learning … Longer” at the Women Deliver Conference 2019 in Vancouver Canada.

Her Excellency said ,the Sierra Leone govt is championing Human Capital development in Africa. The free Quality Education for Primary & Secondary school is impacting the lives of approx 1.5 million children. The holistic approach to education made the government include free school lunch & text books.

This is the first time in the history of Sierra Leone where a political administration has declared free, quality education, with the highest budget allocation which was increased from 11% to 21%. The govt is implementing policies that will make it more conducive for children Learn in every area both formal and informal. Sierra Leone is working towards building a great foundation, because our most important resource is our human resource.

First Lady Bio said she had discussions with other First Ladies, she also had meetings with both Government and non-governmental organisations, to domesticate our issues, and get appropriate solutions. The discourse, led First Lady Bio to launch the home grown #HandsOffOurGirls campaign, with very strong support from Sister First Ladies.

In addressing the issue of teenage pregnancy and the policy of excluding pregnant girls from school , First Lady Bio made it clear, it is an issue for the Ministry of Education. First Lady believes Education is a fundamental human right, but every country faces its unique challenges, and it is the job of the Ministry to work out solutions based on their study.

The issue of Female Circumcision was raised, this was not part of the topic for discussion, but in line with her stance, she said personally

“I have no issue with circumcision, I am a circumcised woman, and I have not experienced any of the negative impact some anti FGM proponents claim” (Paraphrased)

First Lady Bio have always maintained, she will not campaign against what she does not believe in.

She however said there is an MOU with the government of Sierra Leone, stating Female circumcision should only be done at the age of consent , which in Sierra Leone is 18. She agrees with this policy because it offers the freedom to choose, instead of a blanket ban being imposed which criminalises it’s citizenry. She postulated, that the right of passage ceremony continue, because of it’s cultural significance and advantage, but the “cutting” excluded for under-aged girls.

The issue of circumcision is being extensively studied at the grass-root level by the Ministry of Gender, the new administration is improving on previous government by having high level discussions with the real stakeholders in Sierra Leone: the Paramount Chiefs, religious leaders and the Sowei ( Sowei’s are the leaders of an All-female Society that perform the rite-of-passage ceremonies that signify a girl’s transition to adulthood. They have operated in present day Sierra Leone for centuries). Together they will come up with a workable programmes as opposed to imposing sensitisation programmes imported from other countries , that are grossly ineffective.

The Women Deliver Conference 2019 is from the 3rd – the 6th of June.

Sierra Leone Premier League Update

Rejuvenated Edwardians to Face top of the Table Seekers Fc Kallon On Saturday

Two goals, two wins and two clean sheets were genuine signals to show how resuscitated a wiping Old Edwardians side have become taking maximum points against Ports Authority and East End Tigers respectively.

On Saturday, 18th May, 2019, Old Edwardians will come face to face against Fc Kallon, a side aiming to go at the summit of the Sierra Leone Premier League table after East End Lions slip with a goalless draw against Diamond Stars in Kono on Sunday. The Cavallians themselves have won their previous two second leg matches scoring four and conceding non in the process.

The boys of Coach Abu Bakarr Tostao have a point to prove they can beat the league’s best after beating Ports Authority and East End Tigers in their first two second leg matches.

The first meeting between the two in the first leg ended in a scoreless draw with pundits highlighting Old Edwardians performance as their best in the first round of Premier League Matches.

With Fc Kallon’s owner, Mohamed Kallon (A UEFA Pro License Holder) now on the team’s technical setup, fans of the Cavallians are anticipating new dynamics to the team’s present performance. The former Inter Milan striker coaching expertise couple up with his well established coaching staff of Amidu Karim and others have a task of silencing a side which paved the way for his present glory.

With the recent acquisition of Kortor Dunia, Keita and others, Old Edwardians looked a side different and difficult to break their past two matches, but facing  FC Kallon would need another game plan altogether.  East End Lions are hoping the old school boys could do them a favour with at least a draw against their immediate nemesis.

A win for Old Edwardians on Saturday will take them to eighteen points and a place further on the log to ninth (9), while victory for Kallon will take them to the top of the league with 32 points.

OPPOSITION PARLIAMENTARIANS WALKED OUT OF PARLIAMENT IN THE MIDST OF THE PRESIDENT

OPPOSITION PARLIAMENTARIANS WALKED OUT OF PARLIAMENT IN THE MIDST OF THE PRESIDENT

On the 1st May the second session of parliament was opened this occasion was graced by the presence of the President and his wife the First Lady. As all other state functions are opened by paying respect to the country with the National Anthem, the 67 MP’s of the main opposition party (APC) walked out of parliament.

The President addressed the remaining members of parliament. Their are many rumors surrounding their action of disregarding the National Anthem and the President. We are yet to hear from the majority leader Hon Chernor Bah or other opposition MP’s as to why they walked out on the President.

Dressed in their red communist combatant style beret, the APC MPs chanting their party’s anthem, left parliament and took to the streets of the capital Freetown, in protest at what they described as the SLPP government’s abuse of power. Since the general and presidential elections held last March, there have been clashes in parliament between the opposition APC MPs and the ruling SLPP representatives, who are accusing the APC MPs of refusing to accept the results of those elections.

Twelve APC MPs have been petitioned in court for violation of electoral rules – mainly failing to resign their public offices within the constitutionally stipulated period of twelve months In effect, they were still receiving state funds after they had declared their intention to contest the elections.

The APC now wants those election petitions to be quashed, and they are calling for the replacement of the Chief Electoral Officer – Mr Mohamed Nfa Ali Conteh, whom they accuse of stealing their votes at the local bye election held in Kambia recently.

They are holding the Chief Electoral Officer also responsible for the defeat suffered by their party at the presidential election, though they won the parliamentary votes by a fairly big majority.

Critics of the APC say that the party is trying hard to derail the country’s hard won peace and make it impossible for the ruling party to govern an already fragile country. Some supporters of the APC are on social media calling for the military to topple the government, a frightening thought that most Sierra Leoneans will never contemplate. But such is the desperation of the opposition APC to have their demands met, say critics.

Sierra Leone has had its fair share of political instability, violence and chaos, and few will forget the horrors of the ten-year civil war which took the lives of over 200,000 people, destroying the country’s economy which is still teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. The ruling SLPP is accusing the opposition APC of massive corruption during its ten years in office.

The Koroma led APC government they say had left the country in near bankruptcy, with hundreds of millions of dollars unaccounted for, according to various reports of the country’s Auditor General. (Photo: Former president Ernest Bai Koroma in his communist commando style red beret).

A Commission of inquiry has started to look at many of the evidence of misappropriation of public funds and abuse of office by former ministers in the Koroma APC government. This has heightened political tension.

The inquiry is being criticised by the APC, accusing the SLPP government of witch-hunt. Hence the dramatic walk-out of parliament by the APC MPs at this auspicious occasion, does not come as a surprise. There is plenty of bad blood running through the veins of the country’s democracy, which if not carefully handled may lead to serious violence on the streets.

Other representatives of the various minority opposition parties, such as the National Grand Coalition (NGC), Coalition for Change (C4C), along with the ruling SLPP and independent MPs watched passively as the APC MPs in their combatant red beret walked out of parliament today, chanting their party’s anthem: “There is victory for us”.

The president – Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio was unperturbed, as he went ahead with his state opening of parliament speech, which this time is full of much promise and hope for a brighter future, as was last year’s.

President Bio is expected to shuffle his cabinet ministers any time soon, so as to breed new energy and focus into the massive economic and political challenges that are now facing his government, after just twelve months in office.

But in the meantime, the opposition APC is fighting hard to bring down the elected SLPP government. Elections are not due until 2023. It is anyone’s guess what is going to happen before then.

One thing is clear though, both the opposition APC and the ruling SLPP will need to work out together their political differences through peaceful dialogue in order to avoid violent confrontation.

President Bio Receives Sierra Leonean Descendants from the United States at State House

State House, Freetown, Monday 29 April 2019 – His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has received Sierra Leonean descendants living in the United States of America during a courtesy call at State House in Freetown.

In his presentation, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, William Robinson, said that President Bio was willing to welcome back home Sierra Leoneans living in the diaspora and who had long been searching for their heritage.

He said since their arrival, the delegation had visited some districts in the country, where they were well received and given local Sierra Leonean names.

Head of the delegation, Chavonna Frazer, said they had started planning the visit since they established their Sierra Leonean origin through a DNA test. She said they were thrilled to be back home and to receive such a warm reception from the President. She assured State House that they would be working with the administration, in the years to come, adding that they would bring home other Sierra Leoneans living abroad.

On his part, President Bio said he was happy that the visiting team had rediscovered the connection that they had lost for years. He said they were divided by history but that it was about time they made a conscious effort to reconnect with their origin.

While officially recognising their new statuses, by handing over their Sierra Leonean passports to members of the visiting team, the President also assured them that Sierra Leone was headed in a new direction and with a determined leadership that was also ready to re-brand a country working hard to catch up with the rest of the world.

“We are touched and moved by your move because we want everyone to come back home. We want you all to come back with your knowledge and expertise and everything to make our country great. Let us use this moment as the beginning to make the future better for us and our kids. The past has happened and it is now history, but let that history serve as something to inspire us to know that we can do better things,” he said.

Sierra Leone celebrates 58th Independence day: What does it means to Sierra Leoneans

Sweet Mama Salone, is a country on the southwest coast of West Africa. It has a tropical climate, with a diverse environment ranging. Sierra Leone was a British Crown Colony from 1808 to 1961. Sierra Leone became independent from the United Kingdom on 27 April 1961, led by Sir Milton Margai, who became the country’s first prime minister. Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa, has a special significance in the history of the transatlantic slave trade as the departure point for thousands of west African captives. My country is also rich in diamonds and other minerals. English is the official language of Sierra Leone yet it is Krio, which originated with the freed slaves (Creole people) who returned to Sierra Leone after slavery. We Sierra Leoneans have a unique blend of cultural traditions. Sierra Leone is a leading example of religious tolerance. Muslims and Christians live side by side and intermarry. Muslims form about 60% of the population, Christians 30%.

What does Independence means to Sierra Leoneans?

Sierra Leone Independence means a massive exploration of greatness in the coming years. I mean we’ve absolutely been through challenges and difficulties but we’ve always pulled through. We can and will achieve more greatness if we continue to put our differences aside and put the Interest of Sierra Leone ahead. To me Independent means freedom of making your own valid decisions and make it work. I am part of making a change by my inspirational conversation with viewers on all of my social media pages and I Motivate young women of Sierra Leone to keep a healthy lifestyle for their families. Go Mama Salone we will get there together and we will see more wonderful things happening in our homes and community. I Rep you the Lion King and will always do. No matter where the wind takes me your tears have always make me stronger Sierra Leone – A Sierra Leonean

Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 Independence Day means a lot to me as a unique symbol of celebrating freedom of our motherland Mamasalone from the white Man who invaded our country for more than a century ago and we finally regained our freedom on April 27th 1961 under the mighty Green, white and Blue colour – Marvin Sesay

Sierra Leone independence means to me that we are in the state of freedom from dependence, exemption from reliance on, or control by other countries and direction of one’s own affairs without interference. And For the past 58 years of independence there are some achievements although we are all hoping to see a better Sierra Leone which is corrupt free, Improved standards of living, lots of Jobs etc. But Nevertheless, I wish my country a blessed and happy 58th Independent Anniversary – Exo Don

Sierra Leone’s Civil War a few years ago dreadfully destroyed structural and social constructs in the country, however Sierra Leone does not seize to be a home to most of us. It is still a place of peace, unity and amazing beaches and food so good it should be sung to the world. When I think of Sierra Leone’s independence I think about always going back home, driving along the beaches peacefully while I ponder how the cassava leaves will taste when I get home. I think of laughter and waves of enjoyment, I think of vacations with drama filled episodes. But most especially I think of a town, free for everyone to be whoever they want – Mr Bright

Sierra Leone’s independence reminds us of our collective dreams as a country and how we have failed to push ourselves to be among countries that are called “great”. Compared to Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, etc. who we gained independence before, we need to use this day to plunge deep down the sanctum sanctorum of our beliefs, responsibilities and strengths and re-emerge with a new spirit of nationalism that should be geared towards REMAKING, REINVENTING and REDIRECTING our country’s path towards greatness – we will have nothing to lose in that new spirit but our poverty – Francis Ben Kiafala
